Enzyme immunoassay for the detection of IgG antibodies to the pathogen of babesiosis, Babesia canis

The Babesia-ELISA Dog was designed to replace the so far used time-consuming, indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) by using the pathogen fixed on slides.

The ELISA is able to detect antibodies after seven to eight days post infectionem and three days after the first clinical symptoms. The ELISA is especially suited after the inhabitation of a dog in an endemic area and for the detection of a subclinical chronic babesiosis.

Referring to the gold standard (671 sera tested with four different IFATs) the sensitivity and specificity of the Babesia-ELISA Dog is 91.6% and 95.4%, respectively, but referring to an IFAT developed and validated in a university institute of parasitology (287 sera) it is 96.3% and 100%, respectively.
